Over the holidays, I had the chance to dive this magnificent spot twice and I can absolutely see why the dive community speaks so highly of this wildly accessible, super fun, and safe dive spot. The water here is warm (>70 degrees) most parts of the year (the water was a balmy 75 degrees for our two dives during the last week of December). This area is tidal and the currents can be dangerous during peak flow. Sources spotted recommend getting in the water no earlier than an hour before high tide and getting out no later than an hour after. The current runs north (towards the shore entries) as the tide is coming in, and away from the entries as it is going out. We followed this schedule and it worked out great for us. Depths are shallow at 10-20 FT. I recommend split fins for this dive. I dove with both split fins and jet fins and ended up kicking up more sediment with jet fins as I maneuvered the shallow water. Snorkeling this spot is totally worth it, if you’re not SCUBA certified. This location is an incredibly well run dive shop. For around $125 total, they had my partner in a full rental set of gear, me in a 3mm wetsuit, lead, aluminum 80 CF tank, and a dive flag for safety. If you’re changing your wetsuit or tank setup up (like me - I usually dive in the cold northeast with steel tanks), I would recommend starting out conservatively weight-wise and bringing along some extra from the dive shop in order to dial yourself in. Force-E wasn’t stingy about throwing a few extra pounds our way. Our rental gear worked flawlessly during both days that we dove there. Their gear is well maintained and I feel that the prices are very reasonable. Force-E Riviera also carries a full inventory of dive equipment for sale. They were able to help me out with a new set of fin straps after one of mine suffered a breakage, setting me back $9. The front area of the parking lot was full of divers that were ready for slack tide to roll around. Most divers dive the east side of the bridge, but after parking and suiting up we entered on the east side (closest to the way we came from Force-E). Our first day, we spent the whole day exploring the pilings of Blue Heron Bridge and the Fishing Pier. We saw all kinds of fish congregating around the bridge structure: parrot fish, sheepshead, spadefish, angelfish, one or two barracudas, starfish, and more. The current is stronger at this part of the site. First of all - I wouldn’t suggest implementing a setup like this, but I like to experiment. KISS - “keep it simple, sunshine” is the lesson learned. Here’s the story: This array supported me during my first year of full time living and working aboard. The two, smaller, outer panels are 180-watt off-brand panels I purchased on Amazon. I picked these panels specifically so that, when they are wired together in series, they match the voltage (almost exactly) of the center panel, a JA Solar 350 panel. The two, series-wired outside panels were then wired in parallel with the center panel. The array was then wired directly into a Victron Energy SmartSolar 150|50 controller. When wiring different-size panels together and into a single charge controller, it’s important that panels, or combinations of panels, match in amperage when wired with others in series, or serious losses in efficiency will occur. This could be any make or model of solar controller, but since I am focusing on Victron products, this is either your SmartSolar (with integrated bluetooth) or BlueSolar MPPT charge controller. B is your batteries. B is for battery… that works. See our Sailboat Power Storage page for more information on marine batteries. C is your solar panels. This could be a single panel or an entire solar panel array wired in series, parallel, or combinations of both. D are the DC loads wired into the battery. Unless you are building an electrical system from scratch, these loads are normally already wired into your boat. In small electrical systems, the DC loads may be wired directly into the battery. Larger systems will generally have a bus bar or DC distribution panel wired into the batteries for distribution to the DC loads. The Squiggly Lines are your all-important DC fuses. These could be simple in-line fuse holders. These are extremely important safety features of your solar system that prevent fires from melting wires caused by DC electrical shorts. As for any load connected directly to the positive battery terminal, the fuse for the connection of the MPPT charge controller should be located as close to the battery as possible. ABYC code calls for fuses to be placed no more than seven inches from the wire’s connection to the positive terminal. Fuses are extremely important. Normally the answer to this question would be “Dispose of it responsibly”. In an emergency, this isn’t always an option when you don’t have more gas on hand. Mr. Funnel provides an alternative, mobile solution: filter the water out. Normally I approach products, especially ones that make big promises, skeptically. There’s a bunch of snake oil of all kind of types and flavors out there, especially in the consumer gasoline/fuel additives market (check out our post on the gasoline fuel additive that doesn’t suck and look at the videos that test ethanol fuel additives that deliver all kinds of failed results, or do nothing). Every once in a while, I come across a product that’s kind of magical for sailors, and boaters at large. These are the kinds of products I love, and this is one of them. Buy one or two or three and stash them in your car, your boat, your garage. They’re just so handy and can seriously save you in a pinch. There are a variety of different sizes, the smallest can be stowed just about anywhere. They are easy to stow and are simple to use. A static-free (for safety) hose is attached to a brass check-valve assembly. Submerse the check valve into the fuel and make sure the fuel’s destination is lower than the source so that a siphon can work. Jiggle the check-valve to start a siphon. Harbor Freight offers a similar product, but, speaking from experience, I would strongly recommend that you pay the few extra dollars for the West Marine brand. Galvanic couples can be a good thing (as we’ve discussed above) - such as in the case of a battery, or cathodic protection, and they can also be a bad thing - causing propellers and/or propeller shafts to corrode away. Part 2: The Galvanic series and galvanic corrosion Example: Many sailboats are built with a 316 stainless (or possibly even a more noble duplex stainless steel) prop shaft and a silicone bronze propeller. The voltage of 316 stainless, from the chart, is -0.05V. The voltage of silicone bronze, from the chart, is -0.28V. Calculating the voltage difference between the two metals: -0.28V - (-0.05V) = -0.23V; just over the threshold for galvanic corrosion to occur. Since the stainless steel shaft is more noble (-0.05V) than the silicone bronze propeller (-0.28V), the shaft will “steal” electrons from the propeller, and the propeller will begin to corrode. Part 2: The Galvanic series and galvanic corrosion - Galvanic Corrosion can happen anywhere on a boat In Part 1 - Cathodic Protection, we established that that in order for galvanic corrosion to occur, we need four conditions to apply at the same time. In the saltwater marine environment, these conditions can happen to metals that are above the waterline, too. Salt spray and the salty, humid air that surrounds an ocean-going sailboat can serve as electrolytes; a weaker electrolyte than full on submersion in salt water, but still an electrolyte. For this reason, any time you’re working with metals above- and below-decks, it’s important to keep galvanic corrosion in mind. To the left, I’ve put an affiliate link to Tef-Gel, a great product that lubricates moving parts and protects differing metals from galvanic corrosion. The Tef-Gel breaks the electron path between the two metals (serving as an electrical insulator). Without electrical connection between the two metals, galvanic corrosion can’t occur. Part 1: Cathodic protection - INtroduction When we use zinc (or any other material - more on that later) anodes, we’re using cathodic protection in order to protect your underwater metals from corrosion - both from corrosion in salt water and from each other. The nail (iron) and copper wire (copper) are submerged in an electrolyte in a petri dish. Positive ions (the green areas around each side of the corroding nail) and electrons (the pink area around the copper wire twisted around the nail) are diffusing into the electrolyte. The nail, made of iron, is less noble than the copper wire. The nail is protecting the copper wire from corrosion; the copper wire is still visually shiny while the nail is clearly rusting (corroding). Part 1: Cathodic protection In this drawing, zinc and iron plates are both immersed in the same electrolyte and connected electrically together (they could be physically in contact to have the same affect), just like a prop shaft or propeller with a zinc anode attached directly to it. In the oxidation reaction on the left, the zinc corrodes, releasing positive zinc ions (Zn2+) from the surface of the zinc plate (causing the zinc plate to break down) and also releasing electrons (2e-) into the cathode, on the right side, through the metal wire connection. On the surface of the cathode, the electrons react with the electrolyte to form a more stable compound.
